The WorldStar Packaging Awards are organised by the World Packaging Organisation and recognise packages demonstrating advanced packaging technologies and outstanding design. The 2020 awards featured 321 entries from 36 countries, with 214 packages receiving accolades.
The following South African companies were honoured:
Consol Glass Pty Ltd and Nature’s Own Beverages (Pty) Ltd: The Royal Rhino African Cream Liqueur.
Royal Rhino African Cream Liqueurs’ bottle is inspired by the graceful curve of the rhino horn. With no mid-line, no straight lines and an entirely unconventional silhouette, this unique bottle has the stature to convey a powerful message of conservation.
The choice of glass packaging preserves the flavours of Arabica coffee and vanilla in this African cream liqueur and simultaneously echoes the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Even the base of the bottle honours these animals. The Royal Rhino bottle illustrates packaging adding both functional and emotive value.
Glass Decorations CC: The Tempest Gin.
The Tempest Gin embodies vision, design, implementation. It takes skilfully designed and modernised elements of nature and delicately transfers them onto a bottle using three decorating processes: purple vignette coating, fading into subtle satin gold and natural colour organic printing, and adding silver foiling as a final accessory. All ingredients of the gin are sustainably harvested from nature and the bottle is 100% recyclable.
Polyoak Packaging (Pty) Ltd: 38mm C5 Closure and Bottle Neck.
The C5 closure is 25% lighter with significantly reduced secondary packaging and carbon emissions. It is compression moulded for improved energy-efficiency and smooth decoration surface without injection points. The design enables lower application torque. Once opened, the band drops down to make tampering more evident. The band remains securely attached to the bottle to eliminate litter.
The awards ceremony for the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2020 is scheduled to be held during interpack 2021 in Düsseldorf, Germany, in February 2021. Entries for the 2021 WorldStar Packaging Awards are now open, and the closing date is 19 October, 2020.
