Del Wiggill, sales director at CSM Machine Sales, shares his insights on local flexo trends, and why flexo remains as relevant as ever.
In what ways is the local flexo industry contributing positively to the economy?
The most important thing is creating job opportunities for South Africans and ensuring the work is printed in South Africa and not acquired from ‘cheap imports’.
What are some of the biggest challenges in the local flexo industry, and how can they be overcome?
Costs are continually increasing. To overcome the challenges there needs to be an investment in technology that enables high quality work to be produced with much less waste. Waste is our greatest enemy.
Can you comment on some of the latest technological advancements and innovations in your industry, particularly when it comes to sustainability?
The latest is the advancement in AI within the equipment available to the South African industry.
What are some persistent myths about flexo printing?
Litho printers have perceived flexo printing as a method that was unable to match their quality. That myth has been destroyed and flexo today will match litho quality, and is also able to print on a wide range of substrates.
Do you think we will we see an increase in AI-driven workflow optimisation this year, and if so how will this streamline production and benefit printing businesses?
AI is already available from certain capital equipment suppliers and the benefits are without a doubt hugely beneficial to printing businesses.
What are some considerations print service providers should keep in mind when investing in flexo equipment?
Equipment that will enable the printer to produce the lowest cost label is where the growth is on the bottom line.
