Innovia Launches New Packaging Film

P2G, a clear high gas transmission BOPP film designed for flow wrap applications in fresh produce packaging, including pre-prepared vegetables, has been engineered to deliver superior performance and versatility. This helps brand owners and packers maintain the freshness, quality, and visual appeal of fresh produce throughout the supply chain. By optimising gas transmission rates, the film supports respiration control, enhancing freshness and extending shelf life, ultimately reducing food waste.

Designed for reliability in demanding environments, P2G is heat-sealable on both sides, ensuring secure and consistent sealing performance. Its excellent optical clarity maintains clear visibility of produce, keeping vegetables attractive to consumers. The film also retains its puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures, offering robust protection during transportation and storage, while remaining unaffected by variations in climatic conditions.

‘P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,’ explained Megan Hinkley, Senior Product Manager, Packaging at Innovia Films. ‘It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.’

Sustainability is a key attribute of P2G. As a mono-material polypropylene solution, the film is fully recyclable in the PP waste steam, supporting the shift towards environmentally responsible packaging. Its recyclability, combined with its ability to significantly extend shelf life, contributes to a measurable reduction in food waste across the supply chain, one of the most effective ways to lower the environmental impact of food packaging.

P2G is also fully aligned with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), set to enter into force in 2025. The film supports PPWR objectives to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability, helping brand owners move towards the goal of fully recyclable packaging by 2030.

To further enhance its sustainability credentials, P2G can incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers via mass balance. This approach enables compliance with recycled content targets while maintaining the high-performance standards required for fresh produce packaging. It also supports circular economy principles by reducing dependence on fossil-based resources.

By extending the shelf life of fresh produce, P2G plays a direct role in reducing the carbon footprint of the food supply chain. Lower levels of food waste reduce the need for excess agricultural production, cutting associated greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, fewer spoiled products mean fewer transport and restocking requirements, leading to reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
