Morgana Binding Machine Installation Enhances Printing Service

The Morgana EvaBind Plus perfecting binding system is ideal for the short to medium run environment, offering a simple but highly effective soft cover book production system. With the professional multi-layer glue assembly, including side glue rollers, up to 240 books can be produced per hour.

The Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Services at Broadmoor Hospital, managed by West London NHS Trust, has installed a Morgana EvaBind Plus perfect binding system in order to finish a variety of booklets and reports for both staff and patients, following a competitive tender process.

The service produces a variety of reports and documentation for the Trust. They also use both print and finishing equipment to train patients as part of their rehabilitation to give them skills that they can use outside of the hospital.

Venus Kan, Clinical Lead Occupational Therapy and Vocational Services, and her staff were so delighted with the installation that she wrote a message to Martin Baggott, Technical Support at Morgana Systems: ‘I am writing to say thank you to your service and the delivery of the fantastic binder machine. Your service was faultless and we really appreciate the communications we had with you. The increase in short run digitally printed material at the hospital fuelled the need for a quick, compact and easy to use perfect binding machine. The unit speeds up production of work that had been largely bound by hand, with stab stiches and binding tape.

The system is controlled and operated through a central operator panel. By pressing the start button, the binding process runs in fully automatic mode. A fume extractor is integrated and can be connected with a flexible hose to any outlet.

The unique spine preparation with a powerful slitting, sheet-fanning and dedicated side gluing device allows the glue to penetrate for maximum adhesion for the sheets to be bound. The integral dust extractor, with bag, comes as standard to catch any dust from the milling process. The binding method can be selected for padding or cover binding.

The sheets to be bound are held tightly in the clamp of the binding carrier by a pneumatic drive system. The clamp moves across the slitting/fanning device (on/off selectable) and the glue assembly into the cover-clamp section.

A pneumatic driven cover attachment and side-pressing unit finishes the publication for a professional appearance. The cover attachment can be set up in relation to thickness of the spine and substrate of cover, while the pneumatic system is silent-running.

The machine also needed to comply with the strict health and safety regulations at the hospital. Commenting on the selection of Morgana device, Kan added, ‘Safety is critical here. The unit was preferred to other solutions because glue is used rather than staples. With the new binder, we would hope to be able to attract more NHS work for our small but very capable department.’

Adding his thoughts regarding the installation, Baggott said, ‘It was a delight to work with Kan and her team. With the new binder installed, they are looking to produce an even broader range of good quality, consistent binding.’
