Il Libretto Notebooks
Antalis South Africa hosted an exclusive launch of the Creative Paper Libretto Notebook on 8 November at Morrells Boutique Hotel in Northcliff. It was a celebration of authentic craft, creativity, paper and printing.

Il libretto is Italian for the text used in an extended musical work such as an opera or musical. This project brings together the old and the new, a combination of traditional book binding with new laser cutting technology to create a special striking piece. This notebook shows the craft of bookbinding in a fresh, contemporary light and showcases the work of master bookbinder Tino Cianfanelli while combining functionality and art.

South African art taken from art books that Cianfanelli co-created, have been re-created into something new interspersed in the book through a combination of cutting and layering to create new interpretation of the artwork. Reusing interesting objects like foiling blocks found in Cianfanelli’s studio. It includes fabric designs from Lesego Moloka with each book containing a different fabric. It was produced in five different colours with a dustcovers featuring binding tools and artworks with an exposed binding on the spine and a very unique insertion of the bookmark to the cover, not the spine.

The Il Libretto notebook is an incredible collaboration of creatives, craftsmen, artists, publishers, suppliers and printers where all involved gave of their time freely. Mullen Lowe South Africa was the creative agency, the carefully chosen paper featured was supplied by Antalis South Africa from our signature collection of Arjowiggins papers, and included Curious Matter Goya white on the layered artwork, Curious Metallics Lustre featuring the Silver Girl with laser cutting, Lime and Nude, Munken and Cocoon on different sections. The laser cutting was done by The Bookbinder and Laser Impressions and four printers where involved in printing different parts, Law Printing, Multiprint Litho, Remata Print and Communication and Typo Color Printing Specialists.
